Neuropathy


Neuropathy refers to the decrease- or loss of- sensation in an area that is supplied by the affected nerve. The term ‘peripheral neuropathy’ refers to neuropathy of the arms, hands, legs and feet.

Symptoms may include:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Hot burning feet
  • Shooting pains
  • Increased sensation or ‘hypersensitivity’

Causes include some of the following

  • Diabetes (‘Diabetic Neuropathy’)
  • Poor blood flow (Peripheral Vascular Disease or “ PVD “ causing ‘Vascular neuropathy’)
  • Anaemia
  • Trauma
  • Post surgical complications
  • Nerve entrapment or ‘pinching’
  • Ageing
  • Alcoholism
  • Smoking
