What is Patellofemoral pain syndrome?

 

Patellofemoral pain is a common presenting knee complaint resulting from abnormal forces on the knee or repetitive stress and overuse. Patellofemoral syndrome can often be due to abnormalities in your foot function and lower limb biomechanics.

Symptoms may include:

  • Pain in and around the knee cap
  • Pain at the front of the knee which may refer to the back or side of the knee
  • Associated ‘grating’ sensation of the knee cap
  • Pain may increase when going up and down stairs, squatting and kneeling
  • Pain may be aggravated when sitting for long periods of time when the knee is bent
  • Pain worse when running on inclined surfaces
