What are ankle sprains?

 

Ankle sprains commonly occur during both everyday and sporting activities. Ankle sprains occur after a force places the foot and ankle in a strained position, causing a degree of damage to muscles, ligaments and tendons. The damage can range in its severity from a mild sprain to a complete rupture.

Sprained ankle symptoms

 

After an ankle sprain may include:

  • Pain
  • Localised tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Loss of movement
  • Bruising
  • Weakening of surrounding structures
  • Limping
