Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition caused by compression of the posterior tibial nerve within the tarsal tunnel near the ankle.

Common causes include injuries, flat feet, swelling, or growths that press on the nerve. Early diagnosis and treatment, such as rest, supportive footwear, or therapy, can relieve symptoms and restore mobility.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome is a condition that causes discomfort, tingling, or numbness in the foot and ankle due to pressure on the posterior tibial nerve. This nerve runs through the tarsal tunnel, a narrow passageway in the ankle. Recognising the signs of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome and understanding its causes can help ensure timely treatment and relief.

What Is Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome?

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the posterior tibial nerve is compressed within the tarsal tunnel, a small space near the ankle formed by bone and ligament. This compression can lead to irritation or damage to the nerve.

Common causes of the condition include:

  • Injuries, such as sprains or fractures, that cause swelling or pressure on the nerve.
  • Flat feet, which can overstretch the nerve.
  • Inflammation or swelling from arthritis or diabetes.
  • Abnormal growths, such as cysts, bone spurs, or varicose veins, pressing on the nerve.
  • Overuse or repetitive movements that strain the foot and ankle.

While anyone can develop Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome, it is more likely in individuals with pre-existing foot or ankle issues.

Symptoms of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome:

  • The pain is usually felt on the inside of the ankle, arch of the foot, and sometimes the bottom of the foot.
  • Tingling or numbness that can spread into the toes.
  • A sensation of electric shocks or pins and needles.
  • Symptoms that worsen with walking, standing, or prolonged activity.
  • Discomfort that improves with rest but may become chronic if left untreated.

Symptoms can develop gradually or appear suddenly, depending on the underlying cause.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome can cause significant discomfort and affect daily mobility, but it is treatable with early intervention. Treatment options range from rest and supportive footwear to physical therapy, medications, or surgery in severe cases.

If you’re experiencing symptoms like foot or ankle discomfort or numbness, consult a specialist for an accurate diagnosis and personalised treatment. Contact us today to start your journey toward recovery and improved mobility.
