Diabetic Care

People with diabetes are at risk of diabetes-related foot conditions therefore daily foot care and ongoing professional checks are essential, particularly for diabetics who have difficulty managing their blood sugar or blood pressure. Diabetes can damage nerves and reduce blood flow, increasing the risk of complications like foot ulcers. In fact, people with diabetes are 15 times more likely to require amputation.

Diabetes mellitus or diabetes is a condition where there is too much sugar (glucose) in the blood. Diabetes is an epidemic of the 21st century and a big challenge in Australia’s health system. Diabetes is the seventh most common cause of death in Australia. Statistic shows that 1.9 million Australians have diabetes. More than 300 Australians develop diabetes every day.

There are three types of diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes: This occurs when the cells of the pancreas are destroyed by the body’s immune system and therefore the body is unable to process any insulin. Treatment is through ongoing insulin therapy.

Type 2 diabetes: This occurs when the pancreas is not producing enough insulin or the insulin that is produced doesn’t work effectively.

Risk factors include age, family history, ethnicity and lifestyle factors.

Gestational diabetes: Occurs during pregnancy and usually goes away after the baby is born. However, women who have had gestational diabetes are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

Diabetes complications:

If diabetes is not well managed, it can cause complications like the following:

  1. Blindness.
  2. Diabetes related foot ulcers or amputations. There are around 4400 amputations in
Australia every year as a result of diabetes.
  3. Heart disease.
  4. Kidney disease.
  5. Peripheral neuropathy.

It is important to take care of your feet when you have diabetes because it can lead
to damage to the nerves in the feet, leading to poor circulation and increased risk of
foot ulceration. This risk if higher if:

  • You’ve had diabetes for a long time.
  • Your blood sugar levels haven’t been well controlled and its been high for long time.
  • You smoke which can lead to reduced blood flow and slow the rate of healing.

Diabetes foot check is therefore very important. We conduct a thorough diabetic foot assessment to reduce your risk of complications.

The neurovascular assessment includes:

  • Circulation (blood flow to your feet).
  • Sensations (nerves).
  • Skin and toenails.

Take the first step today by booking an appointment with one of our podiatrists to ensure your feet stay healthy and strong.
