Osgood-Schlatter disease isn’t actually a disease but a growth-related condition affecting the growth plate just below the kneecap. This area, made of cartilage, is softer and more vulnerable to stress during periods of rapid growth.
The condition occurs when excess strain from the patellar tendon pulls on the growth plate of the tibia, leading to pain, swelling, and sometimes a noticeable lump just below the kneecap. It’s a common cause of knee pain in growing children, especially those involved in sports or high-impact activities.
Patients typically present localised pain and swelling to the knee, which is worsened when forced to extend the knee with resistance applied.
What are the symptoms of Osgood-Schlatter Disease?
Common symptoms include:
- Pain in one or both knees below the kneecap
- Noticeable lump or swelling in the affected area
- Symptoms worsen during or after physical activity
- Pain aggravated by running, jumping, kneeling, or using stairs
- In severe cases, limping due to discomfort
Any pain or difficulty with your child’s knee(s) should be evaluated by one of our podiatrists at Elite Podiatry.
