Flat & Pronated Feet in Children
Children with flat feet have little to no visible arch when standing, which is completely normal in infants and many young children. In babies, a fat pad in the foot hides the developing arch, and young children tend to have flat feet due to their naturally loose joints.
Most flat feet are flexible, meaning an arch becomes visible when the child is off the ground or standing on tiptoes. By around age six, most children develop a natural arch, but about one in five never do. Flat feet often run in families, and most adults with flat feet experience no long-term issues or pain.
Flexible flat feet in children generally do not need treatment. Comfortable, well-fitted shoes are all that’s required, as exercises or shoe inserts will not create an arch.
