With each step, the foot should move smoothly between rolling in and out, maintaining a balanced motion. In a rigid, high-arched foot, this movement is limited, causing impact forces to travel up the leg. Without proper shock absorption and flexibility, this can lead to issues such as shin, knee, heel, and back pain.
Oversupination (hyper-supination) is far more rare than overpronation and causes problems for runners and other athletes, as in this position the foot is less able to provide shock absorption.
High arched or supinated feet predisposes an athlete to:
Common signs of High Arched feet
- Clawed and gripping toes
- Hard skin or callus under the ball of the foot
- An arch that remains high with each step
Causes of High Arched feet
- Genetic factors influence the structural alignment of foot bones
- Neuromuscular conditions like Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease
- Nerve damage from excessive alcohol consumption
- Peripheral neuropathy affecting foot function
- Diabetes-related nerve changes impacting foot structure
- Variations in foot arches, from normal to high-arched feet
What causes High Arched feet in kids?
Most children with flat feet have no symptoms. However, sometimes they may have trouble participating in physical activities or sports, or appear to walk or run awkwardly. Some complain of pain or cramping in their feet, legs or knees.
Any pain or difficulty with a child’s feet should be evaluated by one of our podiatrists at Elite Podiatry.
How are High Arched feet treated?
Managing a high-arched foot involves a combination of supportive treatments to improve comfort and enhance mobility.
Treatment options may include:
- Custom flexible orthotics to improve foot mechanics, enhance shock absorption, and adapt to uneven surfaces
- Cushioned footwear recommendations for better support and comfort
- Stretching tight muscles to relieve pain and improve mobility
- Foot mobilisation therapy to restore joint flexibility
- Strengthening exercises for the foot and leg
- Load management strategies to reduce strain and prevent injury
Please call us at Elite Podiatry to organise an appointment for an assessment, diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
